If you haven’t already, check out our monthly newsletter – Wine, Dine, and Design. They are always posted mid-month and feature a topic – July’s is ‘vacations’. In addition to our regular articles which includes a recipe with Chef Ryan and a wine pairing with Nathan the Sommelier, we will be sharing a rendering done for an ‘Inspired Space.’ Today, I am here to share with you a sneak peek into what to expect from this month’s newsletter feature!
Because the 4th of July fell in the middle of the week this year, many of us were unable to take a true vacation. That is why I decided to pull inspiration for this space from Austin’s very own Lake Travis. There are individuals lucky enough to call this their home – but for the rest of us, it is a ‘mini’ vacation get-away! While drawing ideas from this photo, I thought back to the basic principles of design – line, color, shape, form, space, and texture. Using the products available through Robin Bond Interiors, I was able to put together a space which very much reflects the elements and aesthetics that compliment our inspiration – Lake Travis.

We have had some beautiful weather this past month. It is time to put out some new plants on the patio and enjoy time outdoors. Outdoor spaces started gaining in popularity a few years back and now they are all the rage. They are especially popular here in Texas where they can be utilized most of the year. Add an outdoor fireplace for the cooler months and a mister for the hot months and the space can be used almost year round. If you catch the bug and want to create an outdoor retreat, good planning is key. We will be happy to help you with a space planning design or with a full-color rendering and proposal with recommended products for a beautiful pulled-together look.
Catch some rays,
Robin Bond
Rebuilding a Future
We would like to extend a special thanks to our precious client’s Joan and Terry S. for letting us share in the creation of their new custom home in Bastrop. Joan and Terry lost their home in the Bastrop wildfires. They were fortunate to get out with their dog and two horses, but lost everything else.
This couple has moved forward with an attitude of gratitude and seeking to see the best in a situation that others might find hard to overcome.
Working with people like this, brings us back to why we love our industry so much and how it makes us all grateful to be a part of our client’s lives. Thanks to each and every one of you for allowing us to be a part of your lives.
We wish Joan, Terry and the rest of their family joy, happiness, abundance and blessing in their new home.

Wine Pairing of the Month
As the weather and climate in Texas moves from warm to extremely hot in the next few weeks, I am in “full blown” rosé mode as this style of wine delivers much fruit, defined acid, and refreshing taste. Unfortunately, the light hued colors of pink cause many to revisit their college days of cheap sweet Lancer-Mateus and that confusing potion created in California known as “White Zinfandel”. I refer to this reaction and phenomenon as “PINK PANIC!”. As such, I suggest an “intervention” for your palate and allow me the opportunity to advise on the great taste of dry rosé. To set the scene, I always say that rosé is sunshine, “kindness”, a child’s laughter, and the wag of a puppies tail all trapped in a bottle … truly, based on the previous, why wouldn’t you try a glass? As well, a reminder, dry simply means “not sweet” when referring to the fruits of the vine. Rosé is produced worldwide, however, I lean towards France given the dizzying levels of production, reasonable $$$, and numerous shades of light color. Once again, Chef Abitz has composed a great dish to enjoy with a great wine. This recipe is great representation of simplicity packed with loads of flavor.
Pesto + Sunset + Backyard + Chilled Rosé = “A Year In Provence” (keep smiling, do your research, is a great book!). As such, I suggest the following wine:
2011 Domaine Sainte-Eugénie dry rosé of Cinsault +Grenache + Syrah Corbières AOP, Languedoc, France
As a suggestion, make a trip to the Austin Wine Merchant on W. 6th Street and admire the outstanding selection of fantastic summer rosé. The pricing is reasonable, service excellent, the wine is always great, and of course, the above is available.
Please allow me to be your “Everyday Sommelier” and always, good wine tastes good, but good food paired with good wine tastes great!
Cheers!

Designer’s Spotlight: Land Art Garden Center
This past week, I had the pleasure of visiting LandArt Garden Center. Located right outside of Austin in Spicewood, LandArt Garden Center is your one stop shop for all your outdoor needs. Housed on an 8.5 acre lot, you can find anything you need from landscaping materials and resources to furniture and décor.
At LandArt Garden Center the staff is extremely professional, experienced, and reliable. To get a full tour of their 2,000 square foot showroom, ask for Suzanne! Do you need some knowledgeable advice on what plants to use in your outdoor space? Ask for James! He can walk you through their 4.5 acre nursery and fill you in on the latest trends. If you have a big project and need the expertise of a landscape architect, they’ve got you covered, just ask for Grant!
For custom design landscaping, consultations, installation, or renovations LandArt Garden Center is the place to go! They offer their services and products to both the trade and public, so take the time to go visit their space and view their showroom. “The exterior of your property is always the first impression,” why not make it a good one.

Pretty Patio Retreat
Summer is in full swing and everyone loves a backyard barbeque. One trend that is taking off is dropping the lonely grill in the corner and having a full-service outdoor kitchen with a connecting patio for entertaining. If you plan the space right, it is like adding actual square footage to your home. In Texas an outdoor room can be enjoyed almost year round.
When planning an outdoor room consider good quality patio furniture with comfortable seating and weather proof fabric. If you purchase patio furniture right, you should never have to replace the frame.
A treated fabric can be used for operable drapery to close off the space in the winter. For a sleeker look, outdoor solar shades are great. Just add a patio heater, and you can easily get full use out of your patio here in the Texas winter.
Some other tips for designing the perfect outdoor room:
• Use bold colored fabrics. Outdoor spaces are not a place to hold back. Have fun and play off of the colors used in your surrounding landscape. Many of the Native Texas plants have fuchsia, coral or bright yellow.
• Include colorful throw pillows to make your patio space feel like the indoors.
• Anchor your space with an outdoor rug. This will add softness underfoot and will once again bring in your color palette.
• Nothing adds ambiance to a space more than lighting. Plan your outdoor lighting just like you would an indoor space. Consider recessed can lighting with dimmers and outdoor ceiling fans with light kits. There are also some great outdoor lamps to further add to that indoor feeling. Outdoor party light strings work well not only for a party, but are great for adding sparkle around your patio cover.
• Citronella candles are beautiful and are practical for keeping the pests away. They now come in many beautiful colors.
• Add large floor pots with those same native Texas plants that are in your landscape. I like to use perennials. That way if they die in the winter they will typically come back in the spring. An outdoor drip system in these pots will make them maintenance free.
These are just a few helpful tips to create an outdoor space you can enjoy and feel like you are on vacation even when you are home. Chances are you will not want to leave!

March’s theme of the month is wallpaper. You can read more about the advances in modern wallpaper in our March Newsletter as well as by watching March’s installment of Wine, Dine, and Design TV. Below are ten wallpaper patterns that I absolutely love. All are available through Robin Bond Interiors.
Love is in the air! February is a great reminder to let those around us know how much we love them. If you want to bypass the busy restaurants this year, I have a great suggestion. Consider making a special dinner for two at home or include your children in your celebration by breaking out the fine china and dine in style in your formal dining room. This is what I plan on doing with my two valentines this year (my husband, Darren and son, Shelton). Chef Ryan shares a great 3 course meal for the occasion and Nathan gives us some special wine pairing ideas.
Along with love, I think of romance and what is more romantic than creating a special master bedroom retreat for you and your spouse. I have a few thoughts to share on master suite design this month.
Celebrate love!

Dust the tuna with coriander, salt and pepper. Heat 1TBSP of olive oil in a sauté pan over medium high heat. Just before the oil starts to smoke, place the tuna in pan for 1-2 min. depending on thickness, flip and continue for another 1-2 min. (Rare-Medium Rare: about 1 min. each side). Take off heat and place on cutting board to rest.
Meanwhile, toss remaining ingredients and place in the middle of the serving plate. Cut the tuna in half, between the sear and plate decoratively on top of the fennel salad. Garnish with some fennel frawns.
Blood Orange Crème Brûlée
Ingredients:

Whisk together yolks, granulated sugar, and salt in a medium bowl until well combined. Add hot cream/orange juice liquid in a slow stream, whisking constantly until combined. Pour custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl and whisk in vanilla extract, if using. Ladle custard into ramekins.
Arrange ramekins in a roasting pan and enough boiling water to pan to reach halfway up sides of ramekins. Bake until the custards are just set, 25-30 minutes. With tongs, transfer custards to a rack to cool, then refrigerate, uncovered, for at least 4 hours.
Just before serving, sprinkle turbinado sugar evenly over custards. Move blowtorch flame evenly back and forth close to sugar until sugar is caramelized. Let stand until sugar is hardened, 3-5 min.

Wine Pairing for Romantic 3 Course Dinner
This is such a delightful, finely crafted dinner by Chef Abitz … maybe I should hire him! Please, all of you lovely couples, forego the nightmare and chaos of dinner out for Valentine’s Day … over priced, over booked, fast paced, … I fail to see the romance! As an alternative, in the calm of your own kitchen, allow Chef and I to provide the “how to”, invite your sweetheart, and the two of you prepare this simple, flavorful, tasty menu paired with wine together, with hopefully, a tad bit of romance to follow.
2009 Gratien & Meyer Cabernet Franc Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine Samur AOP, Loire Valley, France (23)
Salads are always a challenge regarding wine pairings given the defined “green tones” of the selected mixture of lettuce, frisée, spinach, endive or other chosen vegetables. You also have to consider the style of dressing, which is the component of this dish that will determine the wine. As per previous “Wine 101”, remember that acid in wine is Mother Nature’s gift to cuisine and is the “equalizer” when pairing food and wine. For this dish, I am “back to bubbles” with the selection of a brut rosé sparkling wine (again, brut = not sweet). Since 1864, Gratien & Meyer has been producing quality wines from the Loire Valley that represent excellent quality, taste, and value. Produced in the same manner as Champagne, this wine is born from the use of Cabernet Franc that has a defined tart raspberry/cranberry/cherry fruit profile as well as a faint undertone of fresh herbs. Fresh, “clean”, simple salad + dazzling bubbles = a perfect food and wine pairing.
2010 Domaine de Grandes Sauvignon Blanc Sancerre AOP, Loire Valley, France (24)
Fish does not automatically default to white wine (I think pan seared Halibut paired with California red Zinfandel is amazing!). Again, as per previous, the determining factor regarding wine pairings is what is the accompaniment to the principal component of the dish. Given the use of white beans, fennel, and black olives, plus the use of both lemon and orange juice/zest, this pairing needs a wine that is defined by acid and minerality. As such, I must return us back to the Loire Valley with a Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre. Sauvignon Blanc from this area is super “clean”, crisp, and bursting with citrus flavors. Also we have the defined component of minerality … “what is minerality” you say … such a great question with a very simple answer. Minerality is the component of wine that is responsible for the inorganic texture of rocks, pebbles, and stones. For Sancerre, the soil profile is defined by limestone, chalk, and flint giving your palate that essence of hiking through a rock quarry. The Domaine des Grandes is “textbook” Sancerre defined by fruit flavors of tart lime/green apple/bitter lemon, plus lovely dried herbs of parsley/chervil/rosemary, and yes, the rocky, stony mineraltiy. This pairing will truly compliment the “bright” flavors of this dish.
2010 Elvio Tintero Dolce Moscato Sorí Gramella Frizzante Moscato d’ Asti DOCG region of Piemonte, Italy (20)
As a general rule, when pairing wine with dessert, the wine must be sweeter than the dessert. As well, a tad bit more “Wine 101” education. The ancient Romans referred to Italy as Oenotria or “land of vines”. As a country, Italy is divided into twenty (20) different wine regions and is home to well over a thousand different indigenous grape varietals. The grape varietal Muscat (in Italian, Moscato) is now believed to be the progenitor of all European vinifera (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, etc.) and is the oldest domesticated grape known to man. Regarding labeling, Moscato = grape varietal, di = “of” or “from”, Asti = geographic place name, dolce = sweet, and frizzante = half-sparkling. This wine by Tintero “screams” chilled peaches, tangerines, honeysuckle, and sweet cream in a glass … a perfect compliment to the Blood Orange Crème Brûlée. Everything tastes better with bubbles!
Each of the above wines is available at GOOD2GO for purchase. As well, allow me to be your “Everyday Sommelier” and always, good wine tastes good, but good food paired with good wine tastes great!

Twin Valley Residential Remodel
The Twin Valley remodel was a whole house remodel in which every room was updated in order to achieve a contemporary aesthetic and lifestyle with a home built in 1980. The pre-existing 3000 square foot home greatly under-utilized superb hill country, lake, and golf course views from its hill top perch. Highlighting the views, updating the style, increasing the utility of the given space, opening the floor plan up to create larger spaces, and adding capability to use the home as a “model” home were all goals of the owner.

Master Bedroom Magic
When working with my clients to create a beautiful master bedroom retreat, I recommend starting with quality bedding. This is a great way to establish a color scheme and design direction. If drapery will be a part of the design plan, then I highly recommend biting the bullet and going with a higher quality bedding. The higher quality offers a longer life that will hold up to the quality and coordination of the drapery. Drapery is an investment that you will not be changing out for 15 or 20 years.
Many times, I hear from people that they don’t want to invest in good bedding because they like to change it out more often. Having a “summer” and “winter” look is a great idea and keeping this in mind when planning the drapery is smart. Other than that, a well designed space should be for the long haul. A well designed room is going to take into consideration other elements such as art, accessories, rugs and lighting. Changing all of this out often will get more expensive than merely designing the room to be amazing the first time. I find the main reason people want to change things out more often is due to the fact they are never that happy with the room to begin with. They keep tweaking things to try to get to that place of satisfaction that feels right. A well designed space will feel terrific and will keep you happy for years to come.
Here are a few suggestions I have for a great master bedroom suite:
The master bedroom and bathroom should be considered one space. They need to work well together with a cohesive look.
Blackout drapery is an amazing investment for a master bedroom. If you have trouble sleeping or if you like to sleep-in or nap on the weekends, consider investing in blackout drapery. It is more expensive than something that is just decorative on the windows, but the sleep benefits are amazing!
Add a sitting area to your master bedroom. Most of the master bedrooms are designed now with plenty of space to add a nice sitting area for reading and relaxing. Adding this area to your master suite will give you a comforting place to retreat from your children or other activities going on in the rest of the house.
Plan the lighting for how the room is going to be used. A well designed room should have five to seven light sources. This is especially important in a master bedroom. I love to read before retiring at night and having a good three-way reading lamp was an important part of my master bedroom design plan.
Instead of art, consider adding dramatic wallpaper, a fabric treatment, or have a decorative mural painted on your bed focal wall.
Adding fabric panels to a four-poster bed will make you feel like a king or queen.
Invest in a good quality mattress – it will make all the difference in how you feel.
Interior Designers sell high quality sheets and other linens that are not readily available on the retail market. Great linens will feel better the more they are washed and used.
Investing in a beautiful master suite is a great way to reward yourself and will be life giving in more ways than you can imagine!

I posted pictures on Facebook of a recent teen room I completed. The color scheme is chocolate, lime and orange. Be on the look-out for a mailer we have going out in January to check out this room. I got a comment on my Facebook post from an out-of-state builder that orange is the hot new color for 2012. Sure enough, Pantone’s Tangerine Tango #17-1463 is the color of the year!
It is interesting how trends start subtly creeping in long before they have even been declared a new trend. I started moving in more orange tones into my own home toward the middle of last year. This is how trends come about. We long for something new, different — a change. The longing for change and the influence of our environment, and things going on around us and around the world, make a strong impact on fashion and home decor. Wine Pairing for Smoked Chicken Wings
Yet another “home run” dish by Chef Abitz! He truly does make my job of finding excellent wine to pair with his cuisine easy. For the month of January, we have a classic dish for you to prepare for the upcoming Super Bowl … spicy, smoked chicken wings. This dish allows for yet another “Wine 101” lesson is wine and food pairings in which we will emphasize the versatility of high acid whites. For all of the fans of “simply red and only red”, please forgive, however, this is a chance for you to shed your diffidence and try the “never tried”. To all, acid in wine is “Mother Nature’s” gift to cuisine. Acid tapers sweet, “cools” heat from spice, and “cuts” through rich sauces allowing for one’s palate to recharge for the next bite. As such, the following wines are perfect matches for the “kick” in taste to what Chef Abitz has prepared.
2009 Stephen Vincent 100% Sauvignon Blanc Lake County, California, US ($11)
Not all wines produced in California are from Napa and Sonoma. Mendocino, Lake, and Amador Counties all produce excellent wines of varietal character and great price points. The first Lake County vines were planted in the 1870’s and the largest lake in California, Clear Lake, is also located in this area. Stephen Vincent wines represent quality, fine craftsmanship, and excellent value. This Sauvignon Blanc is “textbook”. Hints of “fresh laundry hanging on the clothes line” with defined acid, plus crisp flavors of lime/green melon/breakfast grapefruit/pineapple plus the absence of any wood. This is a great example of how a high acid white can compliment spice and “heat” in a dish.
2010 Solletico 100% Prosecco Prosecco DOC, region of Veneto, Italy($18)
Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles … oh how I love thee! Far too often, bubbles are incorrectly thought off as only for celebrations, when in fact, are truly one of the greatest of all pairing wines. The texture of bubbles helps cleanse the palate as well as moderates heat, sweat, and richness in cuisine. For the above, Solletico is Italian for “to tickle” and is a great reference to the small, prickly bubble profile. As a plus, this wine is vintage dated (rare for Prosecco!) and is Brut regarding style (remember, Brut simply means not sweet!). With crisp acid, refreshing bubbles, and tasty “crunchy” fruits of green apple, melon, and white peach, Solletico is a great accompaniment to the spice and smoke flavors of the wings
Each of the above wines is available at GOOD2GO for purchase. As well, allow me to be your “Everyday Sommelier” and always, good wine tastes good, but good food paired with good wine tastes great!

Do you want to Tango?
The bold Pantone color Tangerine Tango #17-1463 can be used in just about any style of decor. This orange hue adds “pop” and excitement. Pair it with a rich dark chocolate and cream for an energizing room. Other colors that will be popular in 2012 are jewel tones of Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire. Coral and Amethyst as well as other shades of purple are great for more peaceful schemes.
Glidden Professional’s color of the year is a blushing, lively, juicy red #B8.38.44. Like Pantone’s orange hue, Glidden’s red is bold. Red is a powerful mood modifier. In China, it is associated with good fortune. Children prefer it to other colors. Grown-ups feel attracted to those in red.
Whether you like it or not, trends impact design. I know we all fear that the next design trend will haunt us like that avocado green refrigerator or busy floral wallpaper. Speaking of wallpaper, I am so thrilled that it is back! The new look of wallpaper is textural and graphic. Used as an accent with complimentary paint colors, wallpaper adds more interest and is similar in cost to decorative painting. A lot of the faux painting techniques that have been popular so long are trending out.
We are all still keenly aware of our environment and repurposing. This coincides with color schemes of earth and sky with soft blues, greens and rich earth tones like chocolate. Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is Wythe Blue, #HC143. By the way, this color pairs well with Tangerine Tango.
Other things to be on the lookout for in 2012 are native prints and geometrics, crewel or embroidery design fabrics, and damask.
Believe it or not, gold is also making a comeback. This time it has more of a satin or toned down type of finish. All metallics are hot. I love to add some bling to room designs for a touch of glamour.
Monochromatic blends of grays and purple tones will work well for a more sophisticated and understated look. If you are a cool color scheme person, the beautiful gray palettes are amazing!

Sleepy Cat Studio is a working art studio located in the hill country near Georgetown, Texas. Their mission is to be happy, and create beautiful things – oil and acrylic paintings, collage, wood and linoleum block prints, illustrations and the occasional quilt.
Graphic design is also a part of what they do at Sleepy Cat. Vector drawings are their specialty. They love to create business cards and marketing pieces for print ads, and illustrations that combine the painted image with the digital image.
My bachelor client was tired of his bachelor pad looking bedroom and wanted to create a luxury retreat. He had photos from a trip to Italy that we used for inspiration for the room. We achieved the luxury feel my client was going for by installing blackout double traversing draperies, a custom chair and high end dresser from Peninsula. The bedding is from Chelsea Frank. My client initially wanted a poster canopy bed, but it would have overpowered the bedroom in his small condominium. There was also a glass wall that screamed 1980’s and so I decided to do a ceiling mount cornice behind the bed with sheers to break up the mirror and give the bed the feel of a canopy without eating up the space. The chandelier over the bed allows light to flicker off of the mirror that is behind the sheers giving the room a romantic quality. This room ended up getting published in Vision Magazine.
Last weekend Chef Ryan Abitz of Cielo Su Terra hosted a tequila tasting and food pairing party featuring Z Tequila. The food, drinks, and company were all amazing!
I was in the mood for bean soup after Christmas and came up with this recipe that is great for a cold day.
1 Cup Dried Pinto Beans
½ Cup Dried Lima Beans
½ Cup Dried Split Peas
6 Strips Slab Bacon
1 Onion
3 Cloves Garlic
¼ t Curry
1 T Chili Powder
1 t Salt
1 t Crushed Bay Leaf
1 t Oregano
½ t Rosemary
½ t Marjoram
½ t Thyme
½ t Basil
½ t Pepper
2 Cups Chopped Celery
1 10 oz Can Rotel Diced Tomatoes
2 14 oz Cans Chicken Broth
5 Cups Water
8 oz Pkg Fresh Mushrooms
3 T Chopped Fresh Parsley
Measure out and sort through the pinto beans, lima beans and split peas discarding any bad beans, rocks or dirt. Wash the beans, cover them in a Dutch oven and let them soak overnight. The next day, pour the water off of the beans, rinse again and set them aside.
In a small bowl combine all of the dry spices and mix them together. Set aside.
Cut up the bacon into small bite size pieces, dice the onion and mince the garlic. Put all three ingredients into the Dutch oven and brown over medium heat until the bacon is just slightly brown on the edges. Chop the two cups of celery and add it to the pot. Add the can of diced tomatoes (with liquid), 2 cans of chicken broth, 5 cups of water and the beans. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for about an hour until the beans are tender. Add the mushrooms and parsley. Simmer another 30 minutes until the mushrooms are done. Serve with cornbread and crusty sour dough bread.
